5 Steps In Conscious Shopping for Feminine and Period Pads

If you are a female, you have experienced how hard it is to deal with your periods.

Here are 5 Steps In Conscious Shopping for Feminine and Period Pads.

Conscious Shopping for Feminine and Period Pads is not easy, with almost all options made of plastic in the supermarket.

But why do you need to choose a good pad? Let me tell you the hard truth.

I always think about the lost science, the science that our ancestors had. Humans’ history goes back thousands of years. But these feminine and period pads do not exist for more than a few tens of years. So what did our ancestors do? I don’t know yet, but I am very interested to know.

1. What you need to be aware of about the current feminine & period pads you use

So, when we are shopping for feminine and period pads, how should we know what is a good pad? By good I mean; A healthy, safe and more sustainable option. Since I am a conscious shopper, I always look for the ingredients. Well, I started to search for materials or ingredients in every product 14 years ago.

If there is a product without a material/ingredients list, you need to think not even twice but a couple of times before you buy it. Be aware especially of products in close contact with your skin and body organs.

2. What are the problems with shopping for unhealthy/bad pads

I felt strange with the pads that I was using during my period. It took a few days even after I quit using the pads for my skin to go back to normal;

  • I felt itching in the area.
  • My skin felt irritated all the time.
  • It looked strange the way blood looked on the pad’s surface.

3. I started to search for materials on the pad’s packaging

What do you think I found? I tried to look at the packaging. It was blah, blah, blah… You can see this in the videos below:

4. So, what to look for when shopping for feminine and period pads?

As you can see information is missing. I started to search why and found this:

Feminine hygiene product brands aren’t required by law to disclose materials in their pads. So that is not good news for a conscious shopper. It seems there are some laws about “intentionally added” ingredients in the USA but not here as if it was so, there should be information on these product packaging.

5. How to choose a healthy and more sustainable pad when shopping

To stay away from unwanted and harmful material;

  • It would be best if you do not buy on impulse. In general, buying just the first product you find only because you need it is a bad idea.
  • Do not think about the price a lot. If you buy something cheap and with harmful material/ingredient, it costs your life in the long run. However, I do not think you are willing to buy cheap and pay with your life later.
  • Look for organic cotton. Make sure you minimize the touch of harmful material/ingredients with the most sensitive skin area. Because organic cotton is free of pesticides and whatever nasty unwanted stuff that we -conscious shoppers- don’t want close to our skin.
